五味子. Five-flavor berry. Sour, sweet, salty, bitter, pungent — all five in one small fruit, corresponding to the five organ systems. Recorded in the Shennong Bencao Jing as a superior herb. It does not do one thing. It does the thing that makes everything else work better.
